PotPlayer is a piece of software that centers on media playback, and the software is entirely free to download and use.

With the advent of modern technology and the prevalence of social interactions online, many people have grown accustomed to streaming content, whether it be music, TV, or movies. However, there are times when your connection to the internet might not be strong enough to provide streaming content. In those instances, you can really only view content that you already have stored on your system. For stored content, there are few media playback apps with the versatility and strength of PotPlayer.

Of course, the quality of the playback will be based primarily on the hardware running the app, but large files proved to be no problem for PotPlayer in standard testing conditions. The app was able to easily play a MOV file of 1.6GB and an AVI file of 1.4GB. You can obviously use the software for enjoying smaller files as well. The system shows a great deal of information about the file being played, and that information can be toggled away for a cleaner interface.

PotPlayer includes support for subtitles through files with SRT or ASS formats. If the subtitle files are stored alongside the associated video file in a single folder, PotPlayer will automatically play those subtitles when the video content is played.

If you'd rather take advantage of the software to play audio files, you can do so with PotPlayer. When you play an audio file, the app will automatically show you visualizations that have been preloaded into the software, and you can go online to find more. Just like most advanced audio players, PotPlayer features a number of preset options for the audio equalizer.

Even though the software was developed by a company from Korea, every step of the installation process and all of the software itself is in fluent English. Perhaps the most irritating thing about PotPlayer is that it only shows up in the area for notifications on your PC. It won't appear in the taskbar, so you must find it through the notifications or simply keep it active in an area of your screen that isn't frequently populated.

The most recent version of PotPlayer includes several changes from the previous iteration. Subtitles associated with Blu-ray content are now supported, and MP3s can now be played with the lyrics presented as subtitles. The software can now switch stereo channels with the click of a mouse, and you can now set a dedicated location for capture folders. The limit on bookmarks has been extended to 2,000 for this current version, and it features improved handling of logos and pixel shaders. Certain issues related to playing BIK files have been repaired, and the DVD playback menu and subtitles have received some general repairs.
